Additional Information

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning.

I started life in north-west Kent and was educated at Erith Grammar School.  My career began in the Admiralty.  My subsequent career was in the private sector, as an IT specialist, concluding in 1998 which I was working for Lloyd’s of London.

I have lived in Upchurch since 1978 and became the Borough Councillor for the Ward of Hartlip and Upchurch in 1991 and then the enlarged Ward of Hartlip, Newington and Upchurch from 2002.  In 1998/99 I and my wife had the honour to be Mayor and Mayoress of Swale.

Currently I am the Deputy Leader of Swale Borough Council, standing in for the Leader ‘as and when’.  I am also the Cabinet Member for Planning.  Additionally I represent the Council on the following bodies – the South Thames Gateway Building Control Partnership, Queenborough Fisheries Trust, Swale Recreation Trust and Action with Communities in Rural Kent.

I am a long serving Parish Councillor in Upchurch.

My main interest outside of family and politics is sailing at which, when competing in catamarans, I was a National Champion.  I have also competed at European and World levels, I also enjoy music (especially when singing with the Upchurch Choral Society), theatre, bird watching, walking, travel, canal boating and drinking malt whisky.

I am a member of the Royal British Legion and organise the Poppy Day Appeal in Upchurch, the Association of Men of Kent and Kentish Men, the Royal Society of St George, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, being a member of its Sheerness Station Lifeboat Committee, and other charitable bodies.

I am Governor of The Federation of Lower Halstow Community and Newington Church of England Primary Schools and also Highsted Grammar School.

All Members have a Localism Grant, which is a funding opportunity designed to support small-scale, local community projects.  For more information and to download the application form please see our Member-Localism-Grants page.
